01Step

Lock down paperwork and reminders

Before worrying about accessories or upgrades, make sure the legal and payment side is organized. Your future self needs the warranty, insurance, registration, and payment dates easy to find.

  • Save insurance, registration, warranty, and contract copies
  • Set payment reminders before the first due date
  • Save the dealership and repair contact in your phone
  • Write down the odometer reading on delivery day
  • Keep a simple maintenance log from day one
02Step

Learn the normal sounds and warning lights

Drive with the radio off for a few trips. Pay attention to cold start, idle, braking, steering, AC, shifting, vibration, and any light that appears after the car warms up.

  • Take a photo of any dashboard light
  • Notice whether a symptom happens cold, hot, at idle, or at speed
  • Do not ignore red or flashing warning lights
  • Call early if a warranty concern appears
  • Avoid guessing at parts based only on a code read
03Step

Do the simple care checks

You do not need to become a mechanic, but you should know where the oil dipstick is, where the tire placard is, what the TPMS light means, and when the car should not be driven.

  • Check tire pressure cold and use the door placard
  • Check oil level on level ground after the engine is off
  • Look for new puddles after parking
  • Test headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and wipers
  • Schedule service if the battery, brake, oil, or temperature warning appears
